Helping Yourself Before Helping Others

I will definitely admit that I struggle with this on a constant basis. Since I’ve had to be a caretaker for my family since I was a child, I feel as though I always have to put others needs before mine, often forgetting that I am important too. At times I still find myself struggling with my own sanity while still trying to help others out, and although it took me a while to learn this, I now know that I first need to be able to be okay in order to help out anyone else afterwards.

Have you guys ever been in a situation where you felt as though you putting other people before your own well being? How did you handle it?

Have you ever felt like it was your job to take care of others in your life before taking care of yourself?

Hey Luz! I love this post- it’s so important to remember that taking care of yourself first is NOT selfish!! It’s vital.
I had a similar experience growing up and felt responsible for my moms and family’s well being. I often pushed my own needs aside in order to care for my mom, when in fact, that was the worst thing I could have done. Sometimes still, I need a reminder that if I don’t handle my needs before others that I cannot truly help anyone.
Someone told me when I was in high school that if I were on a boat, and someone fell overboard that if I jumped in after them, the only thing that would happen is that we would both drown. But if I stayed on board, I would be able to throw them a life preserver. I think about that a lot when I feel myself taking on other peoples problems.

Hello Luz and Eliza! You guys both bring up some excellent points. Eliza, I agree with you- I think taking care of yourself first is vital. This is something I have struggled with for many years. Even today, it is something I still struggle with. But how can I be expected to take care of someone else in the best way possible, if I don’t first learn how to take care of myself in the best way possible?
I think it’s so important that we practice the best self-care we can- whether that be taking a moment to breathe in and out, or spending a few quiet minutes with your pet, or getting yourself a special treat.
Self-care is something I am still working to master. This post today reminded me that I am worth a moment of peace in my day. Thank you both!

    Eliza and Olivia,

I am glad that you were both able to relate with this quote. I agree with you both, and I feel it is often hard to remember the importance of putting ourselves first in certain situations, especially when it comes to being a caregiver for people in our families, but even they cannot be taken car of properly if we are not okay all of the way. It is a learning process that often involves trial and error but eventually we get the hang of it. I wish you both the best on as you continue your journey in life!
