Mourning the loss of Deron Drumm

Hi all,
I am posting today with sadness, Deron Drumm has passed away. Deron was the founder and executive director of Toivo, a passionate advocate, and a kind and loving person.
I met Deron while I was becoming a Recovery Support Specialist when he came to our class to speak to us. I was blown away by how warm and empathetic his spirit was, and by how easily he touched each person in the room with what seemed to be no effort. I am deeply saddened that his spirit has left our earth, and my heart goes out to the many people who loved and looked up to him.
To my friends at Advocacy Unlimited, Toivo, and Join Rise Be- my love goes out to you in this time. I am so deeply sorry for your loss.
As an agency, we at TurningPointCT.org stand by your side and as we mourn the loss of an remarkable spirit.
Rest in Peace, Deron

Remembering Parkland

1 year ago today, in Parkland Florida 17 high students and staff lost their lives in the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.
In the past year the young people who were affected by the shooting have become fierce advocates for gun control and have made their voices heard across the country.
For students across the country, this event was a terrifying reminder of the dangers U.S. students can face.
How did the Parkland shootings affect you?
To those who lost their lives last year, rest in peace. You are not forgotten.

13 Reasons Why Release Tomorrow

Hey everyone-

I want to talk about something that has been super controversial in the Mental Health community: 13 Reasons Why- the Netflix version of the 2007 novelThirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher.

I have not seen the first season yet, nor have I read the book, but I have heard many different opinions on the release of this Netflix series. I’m wondering what you guys think.

Have you seen it? Do you plan to watch the second season? How do you feel about the way mental illness is portrayed in the series?

I am curious to hear your opinions as I decide whether or not to watch the show.

Fresh Check Day @ NCC

Fresh Check Day @ NCC – On Wednesday, April 22, 2016 we celebrated #FreshCheckDay at Norwalk Community College in Norwalk, Connecticut. The West Campus cafeteria was filled with students, parents and campus/community organizations as everyone cheerfully engaged in conversation  and participated in more than 12 different booth activities that in one way or another, captured an aspect of mental wellness. Each booth provided an activity that engaged students and visitors and helped to facilitate the dialogue on mental health, opening the door for the first for many who, and I quote, “have never really thought about it”. From yoga to painting to even designing t shirts, NCC Fresh Check Day had it all and everyone that contributed surely made the event worthwhile but even more importantly, educational and comforting. The event saw over 150 students and as tradition goes, one student walked off with an awesome flat screen TV after winning the raffle. Huge shoutout to the one and only Miss. Lisa Slade (NCC Mental Health Counselor) for once again pulling it all together, NCC is on a roll!

Your favorite ‘Chill-Out Music’?

On redefining the meaning of ‘Chill-Out Music’ to mean just what it sounds like, what song/s do you listen to when you are just relaxing? … Maybe after a long day; while on a road trip or on a vacation; studying for an exam or just taking a rest.

‘Chill-out’ music usually refers to electronic music with a mellow style, but whatever music you listen to, to create the right groove for a peace of mind is pretty much your ‘Chill-out music”

Some of my choices include:

Jason Mraz
I’m Yours (2008)

Bob Marley & Laryn Hill
Turn Your Lights Down 1977

Junn ft Sam Smith
When Its Alright 2009
