Prepping for back to school

I’m SO excited to be going back to college!

But since it’s been 7 years.. I was hoping you guys could help..

I love school supply shopping (basically anything with a cat on it, I’ll buy it and find a use for it), but I remember when I was in college seven years ago, I ended up purchasing a bunch of supplies that I ended up not needing, especially because SO much is online now-a-days.

So I’m wondering, what are the essentials that I could get, besides a notebook and a pen? I have my laptop which will be a huge help, but I’m also the type of person that loves writing things down. Should I wait until classes start to feel out what I should get, then do my shopping? Maybe it’s my eagerness and love for shopping that’s causing me to be impatient lol

What are YOU doing to prep for the back to school season?

I know I’m not the only one shopping for clothes too! (I also am focusing more on bags and accessories lol)

Yes! Clothes, you will definitely need, even if its just for the winter.

It also depends on the classes that you are taking. Maybe a calculator if you are doing math. And of course, make sure you have enough pens and pencils (esp. for tests). Other than that, just prepare to show up for first day of class (gas tank is filled, schedules are handy, ‘school bag’ is packed with all textbooks and notebooks/binders) then you might actually know if you need anything else for your classes.

I like Kevin’s list of things^ I would agree in that you should only get basics and feel out the rest after the first day or so. GUESS WHAT! I’ve been out of school since the summer of 2012. I ought to be returning 6ish years later…next year. My biggest concern for prepping is ‘getting my diligent brain back.’ Some of this is out of the constant fear I’ve always had that I’m not good enough, but I am also highly aware that when it comes to speed and thought processing I’m below my potential. How I spent my early 20’s probably reduced my brain’s capacities but as long as I don’t give up and sharpen my cognitions I should be ready.

This times around, I think of something I never considered before- prepare by knowing your learning styles. If we can recognize on day one that the teacher simply will not be teaching a way conducive to our learning style, we can quickly intervene and adjust things to make sure we still learn the material, keep up, and pass.

    Hey Allison!

I am so much like you, the eagerness to go school shopping has me very impatient as well! Although I do not want to overspend on things I do not need either, there are a couple standard things that I need for my learning style, and a couple things that I feel like most people have… Here’s a couple things from my list, hope this helps!

    -Pens/pencils
-loose leaf paper (so I don’t have to take it out of a notebook)
    -Notebooks
    -folders
-Laptop or computer (I know you mentioned you already have one)
    -computer/printing paper
    -printer
-an extra ink set for the printer (or you can buy as you go)
    -stapler
-planner!!! (so important to keep track of assignments!)
    -flash drive!
-Index cards (this is the easiest way I know how to study for tests)
    -highlighters
-post it/sticky notes (great for marking up your text book or keeping track of important notes in books, and studying!)

    YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!!

I’m so excited to start school and shop for it! I like the idea of sticky notes to put in the textbook!

Thank you for all your great ideas!!

    Allison,

I’m glad we were able to help. Also, I went back to school shopping this week and it’s a little later than most of the world so I found that although many of the racks and boxes in the typical back to school sections in like Walmart, for example, may be cleared out, if you check out the office and regular school section of the store there will still be tons of things! 🙂

This morning, I saved myself a $140 after downloading a graphing calculator app on my phone. A few days earlier I was worried that I had to get a new calculator. It works like any handheld calculator so this is something to consider if you need a good calculator and most importantly its free: the name of the app is Wabbitemu (Available in play store for T-83 and above).

Well, I got pretty much all of my school supplies! I’m glad I waited until after classes started because after looking at each syllabus … I probably would’ve either bought too much or not the right thing!

I’m waiting on my planner to arrive from Amazon.. should be here Friday. I have a whole anchor theme going on in my life so I wanted a planner with an anchor on it.

Since most of you know that I’m a crazy cat lady… here are the cat school supplies I was able to obtain:
    -cat flash drive
-cat print erasers and a cat pen
    -cat binder
    -cat notebook
    -cat “to do” list
    -cat sticky notes

    MEEEEOW!
