Online Courses

Has anyone taken online courses? I would love to hear from anyone on the pros and cons of online classes. I would love to get more information out there as we make sure young people know there are options to help them get ahead and forge a great future!

Yes I have and I will be taking one this winter intersession! Honestly, for me, there aren’t any real cons that stand out. If you prefer more of a hands on experience and you really enjoy the classroom experience, then online courses may not be something you prefer. A few of my pros : you can do assignments wherever you are (as long as you have access to your school’s blackboard system), have the ability to do things at your leisure, do not have to sit and listen to a professor all day and pretend that you are paying attention, (if you drive) there’s no commute and you save gas, do not have to worry about being late, and you can eat while you work.

I am planning to take some online courses this coming semester too (crossing fingers!) So I can’t help but question this myself.

I’ve heard that sometimes the downfall of online courses is if you’re having a hard time understanding the assignments or procrastinate too much, it will be more difficult to take the course.
I think it’s because when you’re in a classroom with students who need more explanation of the assignment, they are able to get more clarity (and team work with other students helps too).
However, if you ever are confused about an assignment, you can contact the professor or if you can go to the campus where your professor teaches, you can check in with them.

I know some teachers are working on doing podcasts to make the learning via online even better!
Thank you, Rai for sharing your experience! I wish you the best with your winter online course. 🙂

This was one option that I considered after leaving high school, particularly because I had lost interest in the physical classroom setting.

Overtime however, having stayed away from the classroom, I had started to miss the professor-student relationship.

I know this works well for people who are working and going to school because you can engage with your studies and assignments whenever it is convenient but for folks looking for a full college experience, this may not be their option.

I also think that its a great way to complete your masters and PHD… its really the future of education for the working class.

I agree Kevin, it’s def the future of education for the working class. Everyone loves convenience and the option to have options lol

Rai, I really like your pros as well, especially the “eat while you work” one. I cant stand it when professors tell students they cant eat during class.. if it isnt a matter of sanitation or distraction, let the student eat. Too many rules in classrooms and I too prefer the online way of things.

I just made a post that partially describes my experience with online courses.

Personally, I think that (depending on the school and course) online courses are still in their experiential stages. I still believe that there is so much more work that needs to be done to make these systems more efficient and produce the right learning experience.
