Self Harm Awareness

Self- Harm Awareness Month

Published on Feb 25, 2016, Young Minds

March 1st was celebrated as Self-Harm Awareness Month. While the statistics for young adults who self harm remains daunting, we are dedicated to raising awareness about vulnerable groups of young adults who are continuously being affected by incidents of self-harm. According to Healthy Place [America’s mental health channel]:

  • Each year, 1 in 5 females and 1 in 7 males engage in self injury
  • 90 percent of people who engage in self harm begin during their teen or pre-adolescent years
  • Nearly 50 percent of those who engage in self injury activities have been sexually abused
  • About 50 percent of those who engage in self mutilation begin around age 14 and carry on into their 20s

In an effort to address this issue and to help those most in need, we want you to know that there are many resources available to help. Under the Resource page of the TurningPointct.org resource website, (found here: http://turningpointct.org/resources/support-by-topic/) there are many helpful resources on self-harm/self-injury. Please visit the website, watch and share the video included here and hopefully together, we can make a change in ours and others’ lives.
